Abstract
Recent challenges in the relationship between the West and Russia have led to a suspension of political and military cooperation. NATO’s (EU’s) eastward enlargement to include former Soviet republics in its membership is identified as the main components that fuelled the deterioration in relations with Russia. Responding from a sense of insecurity, Russia has grown more assertive in regional politics to ensure its national interests. Russia has been able to project power in regional politics aiming to regain its former power status. Russia’s increasingly confrontational stance has eventually been manifested in military interventions in Georgia (2008) and in Ukraine (2014).
The following thesis titled “Dynamics of foreign policy of Russian Federation, Analysis of Ukraine Intervention” studies Ukraine Crisis, its background and motives of the parties involved. As the thesis aims to explore external incentives and reasons behind Russia’s decision to annex Crimea and to intervene in Ukraine, we will analyze Russia’s foreign policy dynamics in the changing – multipolar world.
After having conducted a thorough research we concluded, that Russia’s decision to intervene in Ukraine was caused by its diverse threat perceptions towards west and by geopolitical controversy between the West and Russia over Ukraine.
In the following thesis we will use qualitative research methods, namely discourse analysis method, qualitative content analysis and a case study of Ukraine intervention. As for the theoretical framework, we consider offensive realism to be the most suitable theory among other IR theories for explaining actor’s interests to gain more relative power and hegemony in anarchic International system.
