Abstract
Motherhood is considered as a part of woman’s identity. The role of mother in our society is idealized. A woman is often evaluated by her motherhood capabilities. There are several different theories about the motherhood. Established cultural norms and expectations of the society defines ideals of motherhood. The definition of “an ideal mother” demands a woman to prioritize her family, to stay home and to take main responsibility of raising children. Patriarchal society constantly insists on women to fit in an accepted norms of motherhood and to fulfill the responsibilities that motherhood requires.
The aim of the thesis is to study attitudes towards working mothers, who are using nanny service and to identify the constructs and ideas that working mothers are using to rationalize their decision. Also, the paper analyses how women see and asses mothers work, based on its distribution between mothers and nannies, whether they feel guilty and how these attitudes affects their self-perception as a mother. In-depth Interview method was used during the research. As for respondents, women ought to be married and had a full time job. Respondents’ age, as well as the number of children they had varied.
After conducting in-depth interviews and analyzing data revealed that working mothers feel mother's guilt. They also constantly have to justify their decisions - using nanny service and try to rationalize it. In order to rationalize the usage of nanny service, mothers use economic, personal development and timing factors as their major arguments. The research has also revealed that mothers are still considered as a primary caretakers and nannies are believed to be mothers helpers, who share mothers work and not fathers. The analysis of mother-nanny relationship highlighted mother’s fear that a child might develop emotional attachment toward nannies, and not towards mother. Despite of using nanny service, mothers still take the whole responsibility for raising a child and being the ones who supports and teaches children. Such division of responsibilities help mothers not to identify themselves as a bad mother.
