Abstract
The title of our work is "Linguistic Analysis of Georgian Rhetorical Texts: Types of Tropes".
Research object is linguistic analysis of X-XXI centuries Georgian Rhetoric texts.
The aim of the work is to display the linguistic features of the study of Georgian rhetorical texts. Accordingly, we also have research tasks: to identify the types of metabolas and to demonstrate their linguistic characteristics.
Novelty of our research topic is due to the fact that in the Georgian scientific reality has not yet been digitized Georgian rhetorical text, so it was impossible to study this type of textual resource with modern technological and software tools.
The present study is based on the texts of Georgian rhetoric, which is entering the scientific circulation for the first time as a new, electronic resource of research. We used the inductive method of diachronic linguistics, which gives us the opportunity to verify the main conclusions based on the Georgian rhetorical texts.
Finally, we have main result: rhetoric texts revival that possibility, which is in languages like a potention, but is activating at the moment of speech and only for some kinds of aims. The orators are using tropes consciously.
The main parts of the dissertation are: introduction, 4 chapters and conclusions. In the introductory part of each chapter, there is a general overview, subheadings, and finally - intermediate conclusions. At the end of the thesis, the main conclusions and provisions are given. In addition, the thesis presents various types of schemes, pictures and diagrams. The introduction of the thesis gives a general characteristic of the work, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical meaning of the work, and goals and issues are defined.
In the first chapter, "Theoretical Guidelines for the Study of Georgian Rhetoric", the following issues are analyzed: the first Georgian textbooks of rhetoric, the history of scientific study of Georgian rhetoric and the modern theories of rhetoric.
In the second chapter, we discuss the criteria for selecting texts of Georgian Rhetoric: type of text, sources, fields (preaching, celebration, funeral, royal, military, judicial, political and academic) of Georgian Rhetoric, genres (speech, preaching, doctrine, teaching, addressing, reporting, meeting, praising, presenting) and periods (Old (I-XVIII centuries), New (XIX century) and the Latest (XX-XXI centuries). According to these criteria we have compiled the texts of Georgian Rhetoric.
In the third chapter, we have analyzed the texts of Georgian Rhetoric from a linguistic point of view, in particular, we have studied the types of metabolas: 1. Metaplasmas (alliteration, asonance, paronomasia); 2. Metataxis (ellipsis, polysyndetone, inversion); 3. Metasemems (comparison, handyadis); 4. Metalogisms (repetition, pleonasm, antithesis).
The fourth chapter is "Georgian Rhetoric Corpus for Linguistic Studies". In this section, we discuss the so-called Sketch Engine (corpus manager and text analysis software). We will discuss search capabilities in the program, for example, to determine Wordlist, Concordance and N-grams. In addition, the last section is devoted to future prospects for research, in particular, works on the establishment of the Georgian Rhetoric Corpus.
All of these issues are analyzed in the dissertation as much as possible. The study of the above issues made it possible to draw some conclusions and we also came to a practical conclusion, in particular, we registered the trial version of the Georgian Rhetoric Corpus in the program of Sketch Engine.
