Abstract
Studying particles is quite a complex issue because this part of speech has a close
connection to different categories like mood, modality, evidentiality, etc. There are some
studies concerning these issues, particles of a particular group but it is difficult to find such
works in which the issue is studied in a complex manner taking the modern challenges into
consideration. The present master’s thesis is a modest attempt to analyze particles structurally
and functionally, and to study and discuss them in a complex manner in the old Georgian
original hagiographic monuments of V-X centuries.
At this stage, we have not studied translated monuments because we consider observing
Greek-Armenian equivalents of particles in Georgian translations, discussing the issue
diachronically and defining the role of particles in the formation-grammaticalization of
different categories as prospects. We think that gathering and systemizing particles of all the
groups in one work and the results of observing in this perspective are the scientific novelty of
the research.
We used descriptive and historical-comparative methods when studying the issue. The
main findings are included in the conclusion. We think that the list of particles in alphabetical
order presented as an annex is a practical value of the work. It will assist students and specialists
who are beginners in working on the texts of the old Georgian language.
