Abstract
Presented work is research about the origin and translation technique of old Georgian translation
(texts preserved in Oskhi and Jerusalem bibles) of the prophecy of Zechariah (one of the twelve
minor prophets).
Text together with other minor prophets (Amos, Micah, Nahum, Zephaniah) was studies by
German scholar Julius Assfalg. Research of the origins of Georgian translation of these books is the
central part of his habilitation work, which is done with the right methodology (with foreseeing
maximum quantity of the sources). Despite, the conclusion that Georgian translation originates
from Armenian and later it was corrected according to Greek texts, is wrong.
Arguments refuting this opinion is presented in our research. After scrupulous analysis of
empirical material, we established that language of the original of Georgian translation is Greek.
Paper contains several parts. Introduction, where talk about the essence of the book of Zechariah,
Georgian and foreign sources and Georgian editions. In the main part research history and our
research methodology is presented, which is followed by reviewing grouped material. The last part
of this work is a conclusion.
Synoptic edition of the text (as supplement) encloses the work. This edition implies comparison
of Georgian text to other Georgian and foreign texts. There, in parallel columns texts of Hebrew,
Greek, Armenian and Georgian sources are presented.
