Abstract
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) represents a crucial component of the modern
globalized economy. FDI forms the core component of the global economic development. It
promotes growth and increases the spread of technology and skills, further enhancing
efficiency and enabling countries to lift millions out of poverty. The importance of FDI is
especially evident in capital poor developing countries which are dependent on attracting FDI
in order to fund growth, bring in new technologies and practices. The growth of FDI has been
closely linked to the increase in globalization. The development of global transportation
system, infrastructure and telecommunications have reduced information asymmetry and
made investing in foreign countries far more attractive than ever before and FDI flows have
for their part continually contributed to the development and implementation of technologies
that make greater level of globalization possible.
While FDI has had a positive impact on the economic development and FDI flows into
developing countries have been critical in funding the past decades of growth it is not without
negatives. One often raised issue is that of “race to the bottom” and labour exploitation.
This paper aims to explore the impact of FDI on labour force, the unemployment and
compensation of the labour provided. In order to examine the relationship between FDI and
labour, this paper focuses on three aspects, creation of employment opportunities,
development of human resources and compensation.
