Abstract
This paper “Influence of Interstate Relations on the Results of Economic Sanctions” studies the
topical question of international relations about the economic coercion.
Paper studies two cases: Russia’s sanctions against Georgia during 2005-2006 and Russia’s sanctions
against Turkey during 2015-2016.
Aim of this research is to outline the impact of the intention of sanction’s sender country towards
target country on the results of economic sanctions. Hence, the aim of the paper is to answer the
following research question – why did Turkey’s foreign political actions change according to
Russia’s demands after the imposition of economic sanctions and why did Georgia’s political
actions remain unchanged?
According to the hypothesis of the paper Russia had antagonistic attitudes toward Georgia and this
is why Georgia did not change its political actions according to Russia’s will, while Turkey had
positive relations with Russia and it changed its political actions according to its demands.
For the confirmation of the validity of the hypothesis, with the help of qualitative study
methodology, works of various authors, first hand sources, statistical data and relevant documents
have been studied. At the last stage of the study, hypothesis is confirmed according to the Daniel
Drezner’s conflict expectation model.
