Abstract
The dissertation examines the discourse surrounding the "New Soviet Woman" in the
Soviet Socialist Republic of Georgia from 1936 to 1953. It discusses the status of women insociety during Stalin's rule, analyzing the 1936 decree N65, the July 8, 1944 Order No. 37,and the state's policy towards women based on these. The research reveals that three mainfactors influenced the shift in women's status in the Soviet Union during the so-called "GreatPatriotic War." The dissertation demonstrates that three main causes triggered women’schanging roles during the Great Patriotic War in the Soviet Union: The State’s desire toincrease the public’s participation or engagement in the War, the use of women’s resourcesfor war-related objectives, and strengthening the fighting spirit of the nation. With theseobjectives in mind, Soviet propaganda tried to create new models of women. The Soviet stateused literature (poems, stories) and political posters to implement these changes aspropaganda tools. The dissertation aims to identify the archetypal female figures that Sovietpropaganda sought to instill in Georgian society through the arts during the "Great PatrioticWar." It explores five archetypes of women (the working woman, the victim woman, themother, the feminine woman, and the warrior woman) depicted in Soviet literature andposters. The paper reveals that, despite Soviet propaganda framing these changes as part ofwomen's emancipation, the true purpose of these policies was to harness all sectors of societyin service of wartime goals. By examining archival materials from the Soviet SocialistRepublic of Georgia, this study offers fresh insights into how the roles and status of Sovietwomen evolved during the Great Patriotic War.
