Abstract
Based on an interdisciplinary approach, this dissertation examines the biological and cultural characteristics of the population of Georgia during the Late Antique and Early Medieval periods. The research relies on a collection of skulls preserved at the Anthropology Laboratory of the Ivane Javakhishvili Institute of History and Ethnology, on which detailed anthropological and bioarchaeological investigations were conducted. Craniological, paleodemographic, odontological, genetic, and radiocarbon analysis methods were employed, enabling the assessment of sex and age structure, lifespan, health status, and cultural practices (such as artificial cranial deformation). All data were analyzed within the appropriate historical and archaeological contexts, offering a better understanding of the population’s lifestyle, social environment, and cultural transformations. The results reflect how socio-economic and cultural changes influenced the population’s biological adaptation and identity formation. This study represents the first extensive and systematic research reconstructing the bioarchaeology of Georgia’s population during the Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages and makes a significant contribution to the study of the country’s historical biological and cultural development.
