Abstract
The following Master's thesis concerns the study of the academic freedom of the lecturers
of Tbilisi State University. As a result of studying the international documents and articles of
the famous researchers, related to this topic, it became clear that one of the conditions for
providing high quality of educational process is academic freedom,
As long as working in a limited environment of academic personnel, cannot be satisfied with
the modern requirements of teaching and research, it will negatively affect not only the
educational process but also the development of a democratic society, because one of its main
values is academic freedom.
The aim of the following Master's thesis is to study the academic freedom of the
University teacher on the example of Tbilisi State University. For achieving this goal, the
following objectives were set:
1. Secondary information analysis;
2. Development of research methodology;
3. Empirical research;
4. Data analysis;
5. Develop Conclusions.
The subject of the research is the academic freedom of the teacher at Tbilisi State
University and the object of research - the process of realization of teacher's academic freedom
in TSU.
The qualitative form of the survey has been used for the thesis – in-depth interviews, through
which the views and experiences of TSU academic staff were revealed on the academic freedom
of the teaching and research process. As a result of data analysis, the lack of finances and time
hinders academic activities that lead to the impossibility of utilizing academic freedom in full
implementation of various important tasks.
It is noteworthy that there is lack of research towards this topic in Georgia, academic freedom is
studied only by analyzing the documents, so our research is the first attempt to study academic
freedom empirically.
