Abstract
The desire to produce this book first came to me during a lecture when, together with my students, I was engaged in transforming old ornament motifs with the aim of obtaining new forms; the work was very diverse and there was no limit to the possible modifications we could imagine. In the course of this work, it became clear that the materials of the ornaments. I proposed did not thoroughly satisfy and meet what my students
needed. That was the main reason I decided to transfer and translate the motifs of Georgian ornamental art into the language of technology and to present them in the form of this publication. Guided by this approach, while working on the book I discovered and processed a large amount of material - fragments of ornaments from different historical monuments. I travelled to various parts of our country. During this work, I again witnessed and felt the whole diversity, beauty and richness of the Georgian ornament. Next step was to create a computerized version of the assembled material, to digitize all the data and process them using vector graphics software, which turned out to be rather complex and time– consuming task. The digital versions on the one hand, had to remain exact analogues of the corresponding originals, so as not to lose the character and spirit of the Georgian ornament. On the other hand, it was necessary to ensure their effective use in modern art. The ornaments presented in the book, in accordance with the material and techniques
of execution are divided into six parts: stone, wood, gold jewellry, manuscripts, wall paintings and fabrics. In addition to the materials I collected, this album also contains samples and sketches gathered by various artists and researchers in different museums of Georgia. I do hope that this edition will be met with interest by all concerned with Georgian art and especially the young artists working in the sphere of design, and if so, my intention will have been fulfilled.
