Abstract
In recent decades, the crisis of interethnic relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union, accompanied by the desire for ethnic, religious and national identity, has led to conflicts. The Caucasus has fallen into the sphere of geopolitical interests of many countries.
This work examines the emigration of Chechen refugees to Georgia during the two wars, as well as the socio-cultural situation of chechens in Georgia and their adaption to the new conditions. The insularity and unresolved nature of some of the problems that concern chechens, who still live on the territory of Georgia prompted us to find out the reasons of their difficult situation.
In two chapters of work the main place is given to the analysis of process of integration of the Chechen refugees into civil society of Georgia, clarification of the reasons which interfere with their transformation into full-fledged members of society.
On the basis of the whole case of sources – historical, documentary, legislative, materials obtained as a result of field researches, the real socio-cultural processes taking place from the end of the 20th to the beginning of the 21st century were analyzed in Pankisi, where Chechen refugees were mainly settled.
The paper covers issues related to the reaction of the international community to the problem of Chechen refugees, to the assistance that was provided to them, especially in the late 90s of the last century. The activities of NGOs working in Georgia to provide humanitarian assistance to refugees are being analyzed. The attitude of the government of Georgia and the official authorities of Georgia to this problem is being considered.
All of this allows the author of the master’s work, the direct participant in the tragic events of the late 90s, to come to the certain conclusions reflected in the conclusion of the work.
