Abstract
The NATO-North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military-political alliance comprising North America 2 and 27 European states, aiming to fulfill the objectives and objectives set out in the North Atlantic Treaty. The main objective of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is to ensure the freedom and security of all member states in both political and military terms.
Expansion for NATO is one of the most important processes and it is based on Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty. NATO door is open for any state that is ready to fulfill its obligations to membership. Since 1949, the number of NATO member states has increased from 12 to 29 via seven steps of expansion.
After the end of the Cold War, NATO expansion process became the subject of intense debate. Some were afraid of how the expansion policy reflected the alliance's relations with different countries, especially with Russia. Taking into consideration this, in 1995, the Alliance conducted training on NATO expansion, on the basis of which at the 1997 Summit in Madrid, the Alliance has invited the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland to join. They joined the Alliance in 1999 and became the first NATO member states from the former Warsaw Treaty.
