During incomplete three years of its existence, the Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921) used to be mainly involved in various scale hostilities or was experiencing the threat of war. Accordingly, for the country that was always on the verge of existence, the armed forces became of a great priority and almost a third of the budget used to be spent on defense. Regardless of funding and priority, How effective was the military organization that the republic created. This is the main question of this thesis. In Georgian historiography, we do not have a work that would show us a complete picture of the formation, organizational structure and armament of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Georgia.
The purpose of the study is to to answer the following questions based on previously unknown, as well as known sources: what the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Georgia were like, what human military resources the republic had, what was the organizational form of the army, staff structure, purpose, number of personnel in different periods, how the military and political leaders of the country saw the strategy of the army's development, what was the moral character of the soldiers, what amount of ammunition the republic possessed, if these weapons and ammunition were sufficient for military conflicts of various scales and intensity, how the army was being financed from the budget and if these financing was enough for normal functioning. These are the questions that are answered in this thesis, which ultimately shows us what type and potential of the armed forces the republic had.
