In the modern highly globalized world, people with different cultural identities are involved in the close contact with each other. Transnational and multicultural companies emerged and multiplied on the international market. These processes brought to the forefront the issues of intercultural communication.
The aim of our research is to identify problems and communication barriers manifested as a result of the interaction of different cultures within the frameworks of a multicultural working environment, to study and analyze possibilities of overcoming them, to determine the importance of intercultural dialogue and its practical values. Cabin Crew of Qatar Airways, with national affiliations in more than 120 countries, as one of the largest multicultural companies, were selected as a target group.
Theories of cultural typology were used as a theoretical framework for the study of the issue - cultural models and dimensions that helped us to identify different values, worldviews, way of life and principles, patterns of behavior and general standards existed between cultures. Quantitative (Internet interview-questionnaire) and qualitative methods (included observation, interviewing) were selected as a research technique, which, on the one hand, allowed us to obtain accounting/statistical data of the research and, on the other hand, to study the behavior of the phenomenon to be observed in its natural environment.
Simultaneous usage of these methods, in two defined periods of time - the pre-pandemic period, on the one hand, and the novel coronavirus (Covid 19) pandemic, on the other, we observed the main challenges of intercultural communication in a multi-ethnic environment and checked our research hypothesis, according to which, daily interaction between different cultures significantly reduces levels of intercultural barriers (such as stereotypes, xenophobia, racism) and uncertainty, preventing further escalation of intercultural conflicts.
