Abstract
The Austrian poetry of the age of classical modernism is one of the most important phenomena of the 20th century European literature. Understanding its theoretical origins requires an analysis of the German-language experience of the dialogue between philosophy and poetry.
Our work explores this complicated topic. It attempts to highlight the main aspects of the dialogue between philosophy and poetry in the history of German literature (using the example of the main representatives of the Weimar classical school and romanticism) in terms of the influence of philosophy on poetry.
The research process established three main components characteristic of German-language poetry in relation to philosophy: 1. A contrary, critical attitude of poetry towards philosophy; 2. The tendency to strengthen the instrumentalization of philosophy in time; 3. The upward tendency of rationalization and structural complexity of poetry, under the influence of philosophy, which reached the pantheorism of poetry in the era of classical modernism.
Philosophical poetry and the so-called reflective poetry (Gedankenlyrik in German) became a special theme in our work aiming at analysing these two phenomena and establishing markers of philosophical poetry based on their mutual dissimilarities. We have proposed and categorized the markers of philosophical poetry.
German Romanticism and German Idealism are the two main events of modern times, the process of radicalization of which created the era of aesthetic modernism. But this path of radicalization portends the end of classical philosophy. Therefore, one of the central themes of our work focuses on this aspect. The radical destruction of post-Kantian metaphysics was carried out by Friedrich Nietzsche. As a result, when discussing the three central figures of the Austrian classical modern poetry (Hoffmannsthal, Trakl, Rilke), we emphasize the distinguishingfeatures of their approach to Nietzsche's thought.
