Abstract
NATO's role in world peace processes and modern military challenges In the modern world, NATO is not an offensive but a defense organization and its main principle is to ensure the security of member states. NATO regulates the security of member states under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, according to which an attack on one member is considered an attack on the Alliance as a whole. Attempts to cast doubt on the validity of this principle are unsubstantiated and devoid of argument. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established to ensure peace. His actions have never been directed against any state. The Alliance protects its members by political and military means. It promotes democratic values and aims to resolve disputes and ongoing conflicts peacefully.
One of the key principles of the North Atlantic Alliance is collective defense. Article 5 of the NATO North Atlantic Treaty is based on the principle of collective defense, according to which an armed attack on one or more states is considered an attack on all NATO member states.
It is to NATO's credit that peace has been established in Europe for the last 70 years. However, with each subsequent expansion, the area of security and peace across the Euro-Atlantic area is expanded by providing security guarantees for new members. During the Cold War, NATO's mission was to deter possible aggression from the Soviet Union, and it was successful. During this period, NATO forces were not involved in any military conflict or crisis. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, new security challenges arose, and NATO's functions expanded. The threat was no longer limited to any particular location and the Alliance also expressed its readiness to stop the aggression everywhere, at what time and from where it was to originate. The fact is that with the involvement of NATO, the bloody conflicts of the 1990s began to be settled. The ongoing ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the armed conflict in northern Macedonia have prompted NATO to launch peacekeeping operations. As a result of NATO operations: the Dayton Peace Accords were signed in Bosnia, ending armed clashes between Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats, In northern Macedonia, a peace agreement was reached between the government of northern Macedonia and the rebel Albanians, ending Albanian separatism.
