The Impact of Separatism on Georgia's National and Regional Security

Separatism is one of the main challenges to international security. It is among the asymmetric threats, that define regional and global politics. Separatism became the greatest threat to a new world order. Separatist hotbeds are found on almost every continent except Antarctica, and many countries have problematic issues with it. The main danger of separatism lies in its domino effect. The success of separatist regions in one country can increase separatist movements in other countries, that will cause world chaos and damage international security. The international community is well aware of the threats coming from separatism. International law is against of aggressive separatism and defend the principle of the inviolability of the territorial integrity of the state.
In this paper, I have tried my best to illustrate the negative impact of separatism on state’s national and regional security. I have studied the separatist movements of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region and according to international legal point of view, I’ve assessed the legitimacy of their secession. I have also discussed the role of Russian Federation, as an actor actively involved in these processes. In particular, based on the preconditions and criteria required for humanitarian intervention, I have assessed the validity of Russia’s military intervention in Georgia.
