Tobacco growing has been spread here since ancient times by interested individuals and by the Caucasus Agricultural Society since 1850. In order to spelt tobacco seeds from other countries and also inuted people the knew how to sow and cultivate this culture.
To test tobacco seeds were sent to all districts of Georgia. Since the 1960 s tobacco growing has finally been established and spead on the Black Sea coats, especially in Abkhazia, where the climate and soil conditions were absolutely suitable for it, for this period in bordering republics – in Armenia and Azerbaijan people started to grow high quality tobacco where before that shag was widely spread too.
Thus, two main center of tobacco culture were fanally formed in Georgia: the Black Sea coast districts and Kakheti (distrect of Telavi, Kagodekhy and Sighnaghi).
Georgian people started tobacco drowing, usage and consumption quite a long time ago, at the same time it become a main aconomical sourse of income for the recidents of Adjara, Imereti and some distrects of Kakheti too.
The profitability of culture is depended on the need as a cigarette and also it’s high quality raw materials are essentral for Pharmacentrical industry. Recently because of well known ewents (situations) the field has undergone a sefback, the largest Pharnacentrical factory was closed in Batumi and ect. Though, today some formers are still growing tobacco products as amateurs and the price of high quality tobacco varies between 60 to 100 %. As accordinglyis it is obvious the revival of this field as an economicaly profitable field will turn into the leading redional profitable one for all districts.
