The present research is a diachronic and interdisciplinary study of the mechanisms of the semantic change in 119 basic English, Persian and Russian words of Indo-European origin. Specifically, it has different facets, employs a number of approaches and incorporates various disciplines including etymological studies, lexicology and semasiology.
The primary objective of the research is the investigation and identification of the mechanisms of the semantic change and their frequency in the selected Indo-European vocabulary present in English, Persian and Russian vocabulary. This will facilitate reaching the second goal of the research that is the identification of regularities and tendencies of semantic changes in the given data. The third range of objectives of the research concerns the motivation and causes of the semantic changes (both internally or externally). One of the lateral objectives of the research is the comparison of the results in terms of the frequent mechanisms of the semantic change in each of the three languages.
