Abstract
The theme of this work concerns ethnic conflicts in the Middle East, particularly
Kurdish and Assyrian questions. Events which developed in the region in recent years
are of high interest sybject in international media and academic institutions. The Islamic
State has appeared In the region in 2010 and that event encourage the emergence of new
tensions between nations and renewed the old ones. The goal of the work is to identify
and address the peculiarities of ethnic conflicts. The main focus of the research is the
Kurdish and Assyrian issues from the Middle East, as the latter was historically handed
over to the major geo-political events of the Middle East. The subject of research is the
relationship between the ethnic conflicts and the principle of internal self-determination
in the international law. The results of the survey show that the ethnic conflict is based
on the inequality and discrimination in society, and the latter is a prerequisite on the road
to the right to self-determination. The study also helps us to understand what are the
criteria in which the ethnic group may consider as a people and what are the demands
that the people should be reclaim in order to use the principal of internal selfdetermination.
The
research
gives
us
an
opportunity
to
understand
what
factors
led
to
the
emergence
of
antagonism
between
ethnic
minorities
and
the
central
authorities,
and
thus,
we
cam
see
what
the
central
government
should
take
into
consideration
when
it
comes
to
the
policy
of
relations
with
ethnic
minorities.
In
the
theoretical
point
of
view,
research
shows
that
the
main
theories
of
international
relations, namely realism, Marxism and
critical theory, can not explain an all aspects of ethnic conflicts. We also saw that
Burton’s “human needs theory”, in particular, security, property, love, trust, personal achievement, identity and cultural security, freedom, wealth, fair distribution of goods
are the essential factors in order to unsure conflict prevention and resolution.
