The aim of the thesis is to analyze Turkey`s foreign policy with respect to USA-Turkey`s
relations and to emphasise the causes of shifting Turkey`s traditional foreign policy priorities
and the results of this process on USA-Turkey`s relations.
The thesis focuses on the following research question: Why did Turkey`s foreign policy change
from 2002 year and how did these changes reflect on USA-Turkey`s relations? The following
hypothesis was proposed in cause of the research: From 2002 year Turkey`s foreign policy
changes were caused of country`s political elite`s perceptions of Turkey`s leadership in the
region.
The theory of constructivism is applied to the research to prove hypothesis. According to the
this theory actor`s behaviors are determined not by the objective social reality, but by the
human ideas, perceptions and identities.
The work uses the qualitative research methodology, in particular the content-analyse and
process tracing methods. The latter researchs the different phases of Turkey`s foreign policy
and compares it to Turkey`s modern forein policy and thus creates the appropriate conditions
for establishing the causes of Turkey`s foreign policy changes. The same method (process
tracing) is used for establishing the causal connection between the shifting of Turkey`s foreign
policy and the deterioration of USA-Turkey`s relations.
