Abstract
The following article is an attempted research of Russian propaganda in Georgian online media.
Propaganda is a very useful tool to achieve an ideological influence. Russia uses this tool a lot, especially in neighboring countries, in order to promote its own interests. That is the reason why I wanted to show the actual situation regarding Russian propaganda messages in Georgian online media. During the research process, we found out in what ways are the propaganda used in order to manipulate society.
The issue is really problematic though. Due to the fact that Russia finds it really hard to accept the reality of independent, democratic European countries existing nearby. Russia finds all that as a threat and tries to broaden its influence. This process has increased ever since Georgia showed the will to integrate in Euro-Atlantic alliance. That’s why our starting point for research was the time when the process of granting visa-liberation to Georgia was in its final stages. I found it interesting to show what kind of reaction Russia had to all of that. I used the framing method in order to differentiate several frames used for the propaganda. And for the research I chose content-analysis method.
I’ve been monitoring five online media sources from November 2016 to March 2017: reportiori.ge, saqinform.ge, sputnik-georgia.com, liberali.ge, ghn.ge. Research showed that the Russian propaganda is usually being delivered in several ways, the most notable ones being: 1. messages regarding reinitiating diplomatic relations with Russia; 2. messages that aim to popularize anti-western ideas; 3. messages showing visa-liberation as a negative fact. After five months of research I counted 93 instances of Russian propaganda. It is also notable that in some cases spreading those messages is a result of internal policies of mentioned online media organization.
