Abstract
In the previous diploma work we discuss the influence of mass tourism on the preservation of
the historical and cultural heritage on the examples of the old areas of Tbilisi. Tourist interest in
Georgia and its capital – Tbilisi increases annually. There are more tourists than locals, in a
country where more than 3 million people live, there were more than 7.2 million international
visitors and more than 4.7 million tourists just in 2018. And this is not even the highest rate.
According to the preliminary estimates, their numbers will reach 8 million by 2020 and 11 million
by 2025.
Despite the diversity of Georgian nature, the majority of tourists start to get acquainted with the
country from the capital. They say, “it is impossible to understand Tbilisi, it should be felt; for this
you should settle in some of its old districts and walk on the narrow streets of the city.”
Generally, there are attractive cities that are oriented on culture and economics, in terms of
tourism. Urban tourism development depends on the economic strength and the fascinating
infrastructure. To attract people, the city should be entertaining and rich with its culture. These
include the appearance, traditions, historical places, architectural or archeological treasures of the
city and so on. The previous work also helps to determine whether Tbilisi has them all or not –
whether tourism is in the status quo, how the rehabilitation works in the capital affect tourists
Tbilisi is the center of the whole Caucasus, not only Georgia. It has both, ancient historical
heritage and modernity, they are impregnated in infrastructure synthesis; Old neighborhoods
with old houses, small dead ends, ancient temples. Then there is a sudden change in the design,
modern buildings, dancing fountains and pedestrian streets full of cafes with different
appearances, old, but well-made.
