Abstract
The following Masters Thesis examines the role of the language into the thorough social integration
for ethnic minorities. The aim of the research was to study linguistic competencies of Georgian
citizens belonging to ethnic minorities and study language knowledge as a factor for their social
integration process. Hence author studies the links between linguistic competencies of ethnic
minorities and the ways they go through the social integration process. Also author studies the
language as a factor in causing or resolving a conflict.
There is discussed various theoretical approaches of conflictology, social integration, socialization,
linguistics in the thesis. Also the author emphasizes the factors influencing persons’ intent to learn
the language, influence of the language on a person’s social-cultural consciousness, phenomena of
inventing the enemy from the person who speaks unfamiliar language and social stereotypes causing
conflict between people speaking different languages. Alongside with the literature review the
research includes historical overview, descriptive analysis of state policies and legislative
framework.
The second part of the work consist of empiric research analysis, discussing linguistic competences
of Georgian citizens belonging to ethnic minorities, motivational and de-motivational factors to
learn the language, types and forms of relations between ethnic Georgians and non-Georgians,
typology of existing conflicts between them considering conflict sources (causes).
