Abstract
The master’s thesis is dedicated to Hereti, one of the historical regions of Georgia, which was seized from Georgia.
In the first chapter of the thesis is discussed history of Hereti in XVII-XIX centuries.
As a result of four brutal expeditions carried out by Shah Abbas the Great in 1614-1617, Hereti the eastern part of Kakheti Kingdom was terribly destroyed. A large part of the population was either exterminated or banished to Iran. Dagestani settlers gradually settled in their villages with the support of Iran and Ottomans. This is how the “Lekian” communities of Tchar-Belakani were formed.
On part of Hereti – the estate of Kak-Eniseli – was ousted by Shah Abbas the Great earlier (in 1604) and he established the Sultanate of Elisu there. Tchar-belakani and the Sultanate of Elisu oppressed the conquered Heretian population. They also arose huge problems for the kingdoms of Kakheti and Kartli.
As for the second chapter of the thesis, there is discussed issue, how the Georgian press of the second half of XIX century recognized problems of Hereti.
The newspapers “Droeba” and “Iveria” provides rich materials of the life of Hereti, about its past and present, on political, economic, religious, educational or other important issues as well.
The aforementioned press materials undoubtedly are the significant source for studying the history of Hereti.
