Abstract
The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that the growing development of computer technologies starting from the second half of the 20th century has enriched the English language (which can be considered the main language of computer terminology) with numerous computer-related lexical items that are quite understudied linguistically. As a result, the following are the study's primary objectives:
1. To investigate the etymology and semantics of computer-related lexical items;
2. To ascertain what and what kind of semantic modifications the basic lexical unit underwent throughout the process of becoming a computer word;
3. To identify the principles of word formation that are unique to the English language and serve as the foundation for numerous computer words;
4. To explore computer terms from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics;
5. To reveal some peculiarities of the usage of computer terms in discourse.
Lexical semantics, cognitive linguistics, and computer technology work provide the theoretical and methodological foundation of the study. The empirical data came from authoratitive dictionaries as well as samples of various genres of written and spoken speech. The componential, morphological, contextual, and cognitive analysis methodologies have been employed in the research.
The scientific novelty of the research is as follows:
1. English computer terms were studied from morphological and semantic perspectives;
2. The terms were analyzed paradigmatically and syntagmatically;
3. The types of semantic change evidenced in the coinage process of computer terms were revealed;
4. Conceptual metaphors underlying the terms under consideration have been identified;
5. The complex process of creating computer terms have been presented.
