The Symbolics of colors and Linguo-cultural peculiarities of its expression in English Phraseology

The present paper deals with the study of symbolism and linguo-cultural peculiarities of colours in English phraseological units. The research paper is based on the interdisciplinary analysis of phraseological units containing names of colours. The research is restricted to the basic colours. My thesis aims to identify those cognitive, that is, conceptual metaphorical mech-anisms that find their explication in lots of idiomatic expressions comprising colour denoting terms. The analysis of the empirical material has shown that symbolic meanings of different col-ours are predetermined by the Anglophone culture and historic events that are stored and cher-ished in the nation's memory throughout centuries via lots of phraseological units and sayings. The analysis also revealed that idiomatic, that is, figurative transferred meaning of these lingual units is formed by the simultaneous realisation of both its direct and associative meanings, the latter based on the universal prototypes of their concepts as perceived by the native speakers. The paper consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions and the list refe-rences. The first chapter reviews linguistic literature and aspects of interdisciplinary study of phraseo-logical units, thus forming theoretical framework of the research. The second chapter deals with the symbolic meanings of the basic colours in Anglophone culture that is verbally embod-ied in idiomatic expressions. The third chapter provides conceptual metaphorical models that gave birth to lots of phrases and idiomatic expressions. The concluding part contains theoretical generalizations of the conducted research and its results.
