Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to review violence against women in Georgia, factors that have
influence on it and existing challenges. The tasks of the work is to study the factors that have
possible effect on violence against women, on victims decision to stay with a perpetrator and not
reveal the violence, analyses of the challenges that the women who have been subjected to
violence have in Georgia. The thesis reviews: the influence of education, culture/religion and
economic status on violence, on revealing it and responding to it.
The victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), the service providers and the field experts
were interviewed for the survey, which revealed that violence against women is a serious
problem in the world and in Georgia too. The fact that the subject is tabooed makes the situation
even worse and the violence facts often stay unidentified. The survey results show that anyone
can be a victim of violence, regardless their education, economic status or any other factors, but
these factors often encourage violence and also affect revealing it. Because of the lack of
information women often do not realise they are violence victims. Low level of education also
affects their employment status, therefore victims don’t have their own income and have a much
smaller chance to leave the toxic relationship than women who are self-sufficient. Disclosing the
violence facts can also be affected by local culture and religion. In traditional countries like
Georgia IPV is accepted and even more, it's the woman’s “fault” and the women that speak up
and break-up the family because of it, are perceived negatively and become a victim of
stigma/discrimination.
