Abstract
More and more students around the world are pursuing their education abroad. Number of
students getting education from abroad is increasing in Georgia as well. The goal of this study is to
research integration of Georgian students who studied abroad into Georgian labor market. Following
objectives are set for this research: 1. Study reasons behind students’ motives to pursue education
abroad 2. Study labor or internship experience gained by students while studying abroad 3. Study
reasons behinds intentions to return to Georgia. 4. Study the barriers that Georgian students who
studied abroad are facing on the Georgian labor market and how are they dealing with these
obstacles. In accordance to the listed objectives, following hypotheses have been proposed: 1. one of
the main motives for Georgian young adults to continue their education abroad should be urge to
get new experience and better education, with the perspective of better job opportunities 2. Georgian students should have also received labor experience via internships or other channels, in addition to
the traditional education gained abroad 3. The main rationale behind Georgian students returning to
the homeland should be expectation of better employment in Georgia 4. Georgian students returning
to homeland should be experiencing reverse cultural shock while adapting to Georgian job
environment. Data was gathered from 8 group interviews, where respondents were BA or MA
holders, who received their education since 2005 in Europe and the U.S in four of the following
fields: Law, Business and economics, humanities and STEM. In addition, two in depth interviews
were conducted with professionals, who assist Georgian students to studying abroad. The results of
the research have demonstrated that: 1. the main motivating factor for students to study abroad is
urge for new experiences as well as desire to get a better quality education for better job opportunities
in the future. 2. Majority of BA students have either undergone internships of have had paid jobs.
Nearly none of the MA students have had the similar experience. 3. The main motives for returning
home, were associated with the difficulties of staying abroad in regards to visa regulations 4. Students
returning to Georgia on the first stage are facing challenges while adapting to Georgian labor market,
but after a while majority of them who stay in Georgia, are able to find satisfactory jobs.
