Abstract
Studying metaphor has become particularly relevant and important since the second half of the twentieth century. The reason for this should be the modern lifestyle and its trends, such as the development of social networks, advertising and digital media. The trends of the modern world, the growing interest in semi-verbal or non-verbal forms of communication in digital media, my personal interest in stylistic methods and the peculiarities of their realization in everyday life, are the reasons for my interest in the issue. It is interesting how the metaphor is used in a non-verbal way in the electronic media, as we can see it in the case of pictorial metaphor.
This thesis observes the patterns of pictorial metaphor in the electronic media, specifically in the online press and Facebook and studies the forms and functions of the manifestation of metaphor. Examples from the press include articles from English and Georgian online press, with accompanying photographs. Social media content includes memes and GIFs that are widely spread on Facebook.
This research buses qualitative and quantitative research methodology. Accordingly, the thesis includes a theoretical study that presents a complex, multidisciplinary model of forms and functions of pictorial metaphor in electronic media, and practical research-experiment that confirms the theoretical knowledge presented in the thesis.
The theoretical basis of the study is conceptual metaphor research (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and, specifically the theory proposed by Charles Forceville (Forceville, 2016), in which four types pictorial metaphors are distinguished. The examples discussed in the thesis are non-verbal or semi-verbal communication patterns; Accordingly, they are adapted to Jakobson’s communication model (Jakobson, 1960).
The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the results of the theoretical research and discussion-study presented in the paper. The thesis is accompanied by a list of used scientific literature, where relevant links to the scientific publications used in the work are presented. Also, links to the online newspapers, journals and Facebook pages from which the examples discussed in the paper are taken.
