Abstract
Power Discourse in Georgian Female Politicians’ Narratives (Based on Political Talk-Shows)
The purpose of the work is to study power discourse in Georgian female politicians’ narratives,
which is based on political talk shows.
It is believed that women’s language is more powerless than men’s language. I was interested to
study women’s language and its characteristics in a concrete field, namely, politics. As media is
the main mediator between politics and society, I have decided to study Georgian female
politicians’ discourse in media, in particular, in political talk shows on TV.
Based on the research goal, the following objectives have been identified to study:
Georgian female politicians’ verbal self-presentations and ideological value of their
narratives;
Expressive value of their words and the means of reinforcing the audience’s emotions;
The status of woman in Georgian politics as reflected in Georgian female politicians’
narratives.
The research is based on qualitative method, in particular, Critical Discourse Analysis. 4
political talk shows have been analyzed from four different TV channels. Through the Critical
Discourse Analysis I have analyzed 50 programs.
As a result of discourse analysis it has been revealed that Georgian female politicians use various
interactive strategies to demonstrate their power and stage desirable self-presentation. By using
the words that have expressive value they attempt to emphasize their social status. Besides, they
use various metaphors to discredit their opponents. Critical discourse analysis reveals how
Georgian female politicians stress their role in Georgian politics. They present themselves as
powerful actors through offering the audience respective rhetorical performance.
