Abstract
The study “European Union Eastern Partnership politics impact on the republic of Moldova and Georgia – Comparative analysis” aims to identify the differences in the Europeanization process in the countries and factors that determine this process. Relevance of the topic is conditioned by the recent changes in Eastern Partnership region on the status of the leader, Nowadays, the perceived “success story” of the region became Georgia, instead of Moldova.
Accordingly, the work is divided into two parts. The first part provides a comparative analysis of the effects of Europeanization process in Moldova and Georgia. The study finds, that the process of European integration in Moldova and Georgia significantly differs in the political and economic fields, which is finally reflected in the implementation of the reforms within the timelines set in the agenda, with the engagement of international and civil society, and in accordance with European norms and values.
The second part of the research addresses the importance of local structures and identity politics in the process of Europeanization. Analysis and comparison of EU support and local structures have shown that the incentives from the EU level do not induce the europeanization process, but leave a great influence to the domestic institutions and actors. Given the example of Georgia and Moldova, the elites have implemented the policy towards European integration, based on their identities and interests, which complied with the characteristics of the political systems of countries, public attitudes and the problems of separatist regions. In the case of Moldovan, as a result of changes in local structures, the identity and interests of political elites in relation to the European Union have changed, which led to a change in the dynamics of the Europeanization process and leading to the implementation of irrelevant policies to EU commitments.
