Abstract
This paper analyzes the impact of "cultural distance" on international trade relations. The assessment of cultural distance is based on the results developed by social psychologist Geert Hofstede, which reflects the power and inequality of the country, the relationship between the individual and the group, the expected emotional and social role of men and women, the ways to deal with the uncertainties and the attitudes towards the future, past and present.
The paper analyzes 9 important dimensions of the GLOBE project along with Hofstede parameters, which explores cultural values and practices in diverse societies.
This paper examines trade relations between 60 countries, and how cultural attributes such as institutions, geographical boundaries, language, or other cultural characteristics may influence these relations.
The paper analyzes the parameters that show the differences in values, perceptions and priorities, that may impede trust and mutual understanding, which is the basis of a successful trade.
The paper presents "cultural distance" as a measure, which should distinguish the common values and norms of one country from another, and use the gravity model to examine whether such cultural differences affect the volume of trade flows.
