Abstract
Landscape has been used in fictional texts since ancient times, and it is an integral part of a prosaic composition, which is presented by various functional meanings.
The study of the artistic meaning of a landscape in the works of Georgian writers of the XIX century, representatives of critical realism, Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli and Alexandre Kazbegi, becomes the subject of our complex study for the first time. It meant to study the artistic value of landscapes (as a part of a composition, background and depicting rising and fall of characters’ mood) from different viewpoints.
The study revealed the use of landscapes for new functional meaning in different genres by above-mentioned writers, which was mainly presenting national and social purposes together with taking into consideration traditions.
