Abstract
Research issues related to the formation of nationalism and national identity are still relevant in modern humanities and social sciences. Formation of the national identity is a multifaceted and multidimensional process and falls into the field of interest of various scientific fields. The paper presents educational policy of the Democratic Republic of Georgia and its role in the process of national identity formation in 1918-1921.
After the declaration of independence of Georgia in 1918, one of the most important directions of the state policy of the democratic republic was fundamental transformation of the Georgian educational system, and in some cases its re-creation. It was not inferior in its importance to such reforms as agricultural, economic or self-government ones. The latter was even related to the democratization processes of the education reform. The Constitution of Georgia of 1921 is considered to be an example of the Georgian model of democracy. However, it should be mentioned that we should continue the search for the Georgian model of democracy in the educational policy of the First Republic. All the more, taking into consideration the circumstances that this model simultaneously included an educational system based on the principles of cultural equality and democracy on the ground of nationality. The purpose of our research is to determine the process of formation and development of the Georgian national identity according to the educational policy carried out in 1918-1921 and the peculiarities of the national identity of the Democratic Republic of Georgia...
