Abstract
The main interest of the doctoral thesis is to determine the variables capable of influencing the relationship between the rate of marital conflict and the psycho-social well-being of adolescent children and their moderation and mediation analysis. The research is interested in determining in which case the relationship changes between marital conflict and the wellbeing of the child in the family. The research inquiry also encompassed an examination of the cultural specificity of the variables identified in the research process and how similar the roles of the variables discussed in our study were to those analyzed in the reviewed literature. To satisfy the research interest, a quantitative study was conducted in which a husband, a wife, and their teenage children living in Georgia participated. During the research process, a so-called screening tool was developed that examines the relationship between the level of marital conflict and child’s well-being and variables influencing this relationship (spousal perceptions of financial status and psycho-social support; family functioning and parenting style; and demographics of family members). To achieve the research objectives, the research was conducted in several stages. First, variables capable of influencing the relationship between marital conflict and adolescents' psychosocial well-being were identified. In the second stage, the research tool (questionnaire) for the identified variables was developed, and then the mediating and moderating nature of the mentioned variables was analyzed.
According to the research expectations, during the reflection of the marital conflict on the psychosocial well-being of the adolescent, the spouse's financial situation, the feeling of psycho-social support, and the parenting style should have a moderating role, and the indicator of the functioning of the parent's family should have a mediating role. However, parenting style did not have a moderating or mediating role in any case. Parents' perception of financial situation, perception of parents' and adolescents' psycho-social support, as well as the level of marital family functioning, acquired the role of mediator. As a result of the research, only mediating variables were identified, of which the family functioning index and its change were found to have the greatest effect. However, in the process of research, variables with a moderating role could not be identified, which either strengthens or weakens the reflection of marital conflict on the level of psychosocial well-being of adolescents.
The novelty of the study is the mediating role of variables capable of influencing the relationship between the index of marital conflict and the psycho-social well-being of adolescent children in our society, which once again emphasizes the ability to influence the peculiarities of marital relations in Georgian society on various aspects of the lives of its members.
The research found that the parents' financial situation, the feeling of their and their children’s psycho-social support and the change in the functioning of the parents' family in Georgia derives from the family conflict index and is reflected in the deterioration of the adolescent's psycho-social well-being. As for the parenting style, which did not acquire a mediating and moderating role in the research, it can be related to the cultural peculiarity and defined as the interest of future research.
The scientific value of the paper is that research of similar purpose has not been conducted in Georgia so far, and there was no scientific justification for the mediating and moderating roles of variables capable of influencing the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of the study, which would create a more empirical basis for family psychology as a therapeutic practical direction.
The practical value of the paper is the screening tool developed in the research process, which in the future will be a good supportive tool for the psychotherapist or family researcher before planning family therapy in order to identify variables affecting the adolescent's well-being.
