Abstract
The new wave of intellectual migrants and the new challenges that it has brought on to
the global economy, is under the scientists' radar for over the last 50 years, or so. Hence, this
paper examines the emerging tendencies (migrants' destination countries, positive & negative
aspect and etc), the causes of brain drain and current state of affairs of the intellectual migration,
globally and in Georgia.
The structure of the research is composed of: introduction, three chapters, conclusion
and bibliography. The introduction discusses the actuality of the subject, the aim, the object &
the subject, research methodology, scientific literature, hypothesis, results and the practical
significance of the research paper. The surveys conducted by the author, provide an in-dept
analysis of the latest statistics and trends in Georgian intellectual migration.
The first chapter: "Intellectual Migration and its Causes" is dedicated to the discussion of
subjects such as: the theoretical and methodological basis of intellectual migration, general
tendencies of brain drain (based on the analysis of the countries such as: China, India, Iran and
Georgia), the causes of migration, such as: ecology, globalization, information technologies,
sexism, education and corruption.
In the second chapter "the Positive and Negative Aspects of Intellectual Migration", the
author examines positive effects ( education, spread of innovation, money transfers) and
negative effects (human capital reduction, suspension of technology development, difficulty of
creating a stable social environment and "sunk" investments).
As for the third chapter, it is dedicated to the analysis and survey of the local citizens',
Georgian emigrants' and local experts' surveys concerning intellectual migration. All of the
mentioned surveys were designed and conducted specifically for the research paper.
The results of the aforementioned study can be used by specialists of the subject, together
with universities and interested parties for the study of intellectual migration, its tendencies and
consequential causes.
