Abstract
Georgia's longstanding tradition in metal processing, spanning millennia. Metal sculpture is an integral part of Georgian art, yet there remain unexplored areas within this field. The dissertation is the first monographic study that aims to ascertain character of the most important jewelry technique, filigree, in Georgian metalwork of 19th-20th centuries. On the basis of the artistic-stylistic and technical analysis of the works, the characteristics, traditions and influences of important goldsmith centeres working on the mentioned technique are discussed and analyzed in historical-political or socio-economic point of view. The study of Akhaltsikhe filigree has special place in the work, as in the given period their works were distinguished by their innovative character.
The scientiphic novelty of the dissertation is restoring the chronological line of Akhaltsikhe filigree works and presenting their individual characteristics on the basis of artistic-stylistic and technical analysis. It should be mentioned that the materials selected for the research has not been studied yet, most of the works aren’t dated correctly. Therefore, restoring the chronological line and revealing the stages of development were associated with difficulties.
Comparative analysis with parallel materials enabled us to discern local traditions and influences from Western and Eastern cultures that coalesced within Georgian culture during the study period.
Beside of this, the discussion of the works of modern goldsmiths working on the filigree technique allowed us to clearly understand the old and new traditions.
The concluding part of the dissertation summarizes the results of the artistic-stylistic and technical analysis of the collections selected for the study.
