Abstract
The goal of this master’s thesis is to assess spatial peculiarities of social inequality in
Tbilisi and explain their potential reasons. I analyze key quantitative characteristics of population
segregation through the lens of the theoretical concepts on post-Socialist cities.
Thoughout the 20th century, urban population of Eastern Europe lived in more or less
equal conditions, because of the existing planned economy and centralized control of the state in
virtually all areas, including urban planning, housing provision, public healthcare, or distribution
of economic benefit.
As the the Soviet Union collapsed and the planned economy became obsolete in the
early 1990s, socio-economic inequalities become apparent, especially in relation with the quality of
life. The rate of unemployment also increased in difference with the Soviet Union, where
unemployment was almost non-existent. As the result, social and economic segregation of Eastern
Europe’s urban population also became prevalent. Neoliberal economic transformations had its
share in the formation of such patterns, as it guided free market reforms in the post-Socialist
countries.
