Abstract
My Master's thesis refers to the impact of labor migration of Georgian women on children
left behind. Nowadays, on the background of the unemployment and economic situation in
the country, the number of Georgian immigrant women is more than the number of
immigrant men. The tendency of growing number of immigrant Georgian women is
remarkable and gives the impression of certain influences on their children.
The research was conducted with Georgian immigrant women in Greece and Italy and with
their children. Countries were selected by two criteria. First, the number of Georgian
immigrants in these countries is the highest, and second, Greece and Italy are leading the EU
countries with money transfers to Georgia. Hence, it is interesting to know what is the
relationship between economic benefits and social losses that the children of immigrant
mothers face.
As it turned out, Georgian immigrant women are quite successful using "Transnational
Motherhood" strategies in relation to their children and family. Their children are trying to
use their capabilities to maximize their benefits in order to create a better future. Despite the
benefits from immigrant mothers, children have experienced very important social losses,
however, these losses are rationally evaluated by children because of the benefits and they
try to justify emigration of mothers considering the environmental factors.
Concerning attitude of migrants to the feminization of labor migration, the respondents are
mainly negatively evaluated and they wish they did not have such an experience.
