Abstract
The present paper discusses causes of gender pay gap in Georgian labour market. Equal remuneration
principle for equal work is prerequisite to ensure gender equality in labour legislation. However, in
Georgia among men and women such gap still exists.
Taking the aim of the research into account, following objectives were elaborated: to study the
importance of gender pay gap, to examine historical background of gender pay gap and to study to
what extent gender pay gap is present in Georgia. The focus group of the research are women. As for
the subject of the research, it is gender pay gap. The hypothesis of the research has the following
formulation: The cause of gender pay gap has cultural roots and can be attributed to the existence of
patriarchal society in the country. Furthermore, another reason that might have impact on gender pay
gap in Georgia is imbalanced labour market in terms of gender.
The research was undertaken through qualitative social research method. In addition to secondary
sources desk research, 5 interviews with targeted experts (non-probability, purposive sampling) were
conducted. The data is presented in narrative form.
