Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the characteristics of winemaking and viticulture in Kakheti region and show the reasons of the latter being the leading sector of agriculture in this particular region since it has a great importance in the economic development of Georgia.
As the growth of viticulture is a prerequisite for the development of winemaking, it is necessary to discuss them both equally. For this very reason I reviewed viticulture as well as winemaking in the following thesis.
In this paper I tried to show both, positive and negative outcomes of winemaking, as well as the tendencies that have been typical for the field by comparing the statistical data of 2004 and 2014 years.
It was also aimed to demonstrate the potential of Kakheti region in winemaking and highlight those conditions that contribute to further development.
This paper discusses the position of Kakhetian wine in the local and the international wine markets, the reasons of it being represented in the higher price segment and the barriers that prevent the above-mentioned wine to be more widely produced and therefore to get its place in the lower price segment.
To analyze the price determination process of Kakhetian wine, I used Heckscher-Ohlin model which studies the price determination by considering three main factors, such as labor, capital and land.
In order to achieve all the above-mentioned objectives and research the aspects of winemaking and viticulture, qualitative research methods were used.
Finally, my work will be useful for those interested in the current situation and further development of winemaking in Kakheti region.
