Abstract
The research paper is focused to the archaeology and history of the ancient city of Phasis from Greek colonies up to the 19th century. It discusses more than 60 historical sources and reviews different scholars’ opinions about the localisation of the city. In addition, an important part of the thesis is devoted to the medieval history of Phasis, which is frequently neglected in previous studies. In order to achieve goals of the research multiple remote sensing techniques were used such as: GIS, aerial photographs, photogrammetry etc. I conclude that a dispersed urbanization model best fits the historical and archaeological evidence and was the only option to defend the city from hazardous flooding from the river Rioni.
The research was carried out using the Poti - Colchian Culture Museum as a base, where archival collections were studied for the presented dissertation. Further material discovered during new archaeological survey and excavation were deposited at the museum by the Kolkheti Archaeological Expedition (led by Teimuraz Mikeladze) and the Hydroarchaeological Expedition (led by Gela Gamkrelidze).
