Abstract
The purpose of the dissertation is to study the performance of being Georgian. More specifically, it looks at how Georgian guides present Georgia to foreign visitors. The act of creating an image for Georgia and presenting it in order to carve out its niche on the international stage has become an important endeavor. In this process, it is important for the characteristics and the traditions of the nation, which are to be emphasized, to be chosen wisely, be they intended for official or unofficial discussions.
I chose the Georgian guides as my target sample, as they tend to present themselves and their country in an official manner, which makes their presentation a part of the national narrative.
The guides are the individuals, who are presenting the country to both foreign, as well as domestic guests and play an important role (alongside historians) in formulating the national narrative.
The aim of my research is to study the specifics of the presentation of the country with an emphasis on tradition invention (Hobsbawm. 1983) and cultural intimacy (Herzfeld. 2005. 2nd edition), using the qualitative methods of research. The targets that need to be studied in order for the said aim to be achieved include researching the angles that the guides try to present the country from, the differences between the guides presenting the country to foreigners and them doing the same with local guests and how they themselves believe the narratives that they are presenting to the foreign tourists.
The results of the research conducted showed that the performance of the guides is dependent on their work location. They often show the country in a variety of lights. Those working in museums emphasize the rich and ancient culture of the nation, those from Gelati and Mtskheta prefer to show the country that of Orthodox Christians, while some unattached guides like to show Georgia as a unique, traditionalist country which also happens to be the homeland of wine.
