Abstract
This master’s thesis aims at identifying key tendencies of covering terrorism topics in the Georgian online media, and establishing whether the impartial and objective media standards are observed or not.
Terrorism remains to be one of the biggest challenges for the modern world, and while breaking another news, the media always faces adilemma about how to report this information to the public.
Based on the actuality of the topic, we thought it would be important to highlight the key trends associated with the coverage of stories on terrorism, and respectively, to develop recommendations as well.
Theresearchlasted for 13 months (from 01.03.2016 until 31.03.2017). There were 3 Georgian online outlets selected for the study: netgazeti.ge; tabula.ge and ipn.ge. The research was performed based on the method of content analysis. In total, there were 2,097 pieces analyzed, which were reported by the selected media outlets. The research was done in accordance with the “framing theory”, enabling us to determine which frames the terrorism topics would fall within.
The research made it possible to partially prove the hypothesis that the Georgian online media (namely, the online outlets that we have selected as research objects) cover the terrorisms topics without paying due consideration to the recommendations developed by the international media.
