Abstract
The purpose of the work is to study the self-presentation of Orthodox thematic groups based on the
posts and discussions in social network Facebook. In their discussions it clearly shows how the
Orthodox groups are self-presenting, how they link religion and nationalism, in what direction do
they highlight the nationality and how they oppose spreading/establishment of anti-nationalist
values in Georgian social life. These groups are trying to create a narrative where Orthodoxy and
Orthodox values will define the social aspects of the Georgian nation.
The pages of thematic Orthodox groups have tens of thousands of “likes” and “followers”, as well as
a large number of people participating in their posts and discussions. I think the study of their selfpresentation
is important because the rhetorical performance of these groups in social network is
an example of the use of nationalist elements by religion, and the posts created by them show how
the public may be encouraged to awake up the religious-nationalist sentiments by at first glance,
“harmless” discourses.
The study was conducted by qualitative research methods, in particular, has been used the critical
analysis method of discus and analyzed posts and discussions of three months (March, April, May)
of these thematic groups in the social network “Facebook”, which helped me to identify the
different forms of interaction of religion and nationalism in Georgian reality.
