The study aims at clarifying the reasons of the growth of slums in the Autonomous Republic
of Ajara. The research includes the following topics: the socio-economic situation of the
inhabitants of "Dream City", the analysis of the state policies, the examination of the reasons
of the pooulation growth in 2012 -2019, the ecologic circumstances in the region, the impacts
if deindustrialization and privatization on the country.
The paper is based on the theory of Mike Davis. In his book "the Planet of Slums", he tries to
outline the link between neoliberal policies of since 70's and the growth of slums in developing
nations. For Davis, the multiplicity of slums is the consequence of imperialism - the exclusion
of the inhabitants of the slum from social, political and cultural life.
The study also discusses the report by the UN Habitat, which represents first attempt to
describe the histiry and dynamics of slums around the world. The research will rely on the
qualitative methods, namely interviews with indviduals and experts. The independent variable
- poverty as reason for thegrowth of the slums - has been confirmed
