Abstract
The Sphinx is one of the most popular figures in the mytho-poetic tradition and consequently it has been used in various artistic forms both in Greek and global culture. It is no surprise, that the figure of the Sphinx after undergoing certain changes during the centuries, it returned back to the modern Greek literature.
The main goal of the presented study is to carefully observe how the mythological figure of the Sphinx has been developed, what changes it has undergone, if it has at all, what is the symbolic meaning of this figure and how it has been used in literature according each era and literary movement. In this study, attention is mainly paid in the role of figure of the Sphinx in the ancient, English and modern Greek literature. The Sphinx, both as a symbol and as a figure, it has been very popular not only in the global literature, but also in painting, sculpture and in various religions all around the world, however the main interest of this study is the examination of the literary field and more specifically, we will try find out if there are any analogies between the English and Greek literature concerning the role of the figure of the Sphinx, because, in our opinion, English writers influenced the most Greek literature.
