Abstract
Proverbs constitute a unique linguistic, cultural, and cognitive phenomenon. The study of proverbs holds significance not only linguistically but also across various disciplines. Linguistic analysis, in particular, takes precedence as it unveils the specific characteristics of a nation's life, history, and culture embedded within its language. Proverbs encapsulate ancient encoded knowledge, representing a genre of folk oral traditions perpetuated through contemporary oral discourse. Within them, one finds a concentration of experience, wisdom, moral teachings, and educational insights. The universal moral principles and admonitions inherent in proverbs are often imbued with national characteristics, allowing for a blend of isomorphism and allomorphism, variability, and invariance, natural to this form of expression. Given these nuances, the research into Kartvelian proverbs and the complex comparative analysis of the cultural and cognitive phenomena they reflect assume paramount importance. The aim of this thesis is to present a linguistic-expressive inventory presented in Kartvelian proverbs. This inventory lets the proverbs to be portrayed as phrases characterized by flexible and expansive content, encapsulating generalized wisdom and distinctive intonation. To achieve this goal, specific tasks have been outlined aimed at elucidating the structure, semantics, and lexical peculiarities of Kartvelian proverbs. Accomplishing these tasks will outline the general typology of common Kartvelian proverbs and delineate specific linguistic features unique to this domain. Its comprehensive presentation of morphosyntactic, linguo-cultural, and lexical-semantic aspects of proverbs is another determinant of the novelty of this work, offering fresh insights into traditional theoretical frameworks and empirical analyses.
The material analyzed in this thesis comprises printed editions of Kartvelian proverbs, corpus data, as well as archival and field materials obtained at different times. Field materials predominantly consist of proverb variations and contextual data gathered from speakers and confirmed by them.
The thesis is structured into four main chapters, each accompanied by corresponding sub-chapters, an extensive bibliography, and an appendix grouping Kartvelian proverbs based on thematic-semantic unity. The methodological framework of this work was crafted with careful consideration of the research issues and the specificity of the material under discussion. It incorporates descriptive, statistical, historical-comparative, and contrastive analyses, along with techniques such as substitution, permutation, syntactic transformation, fieldwork, elicitation, and corpus-based and corpus-driven research methods. Through these methodologies, existing perspectives have been validated, and novel insights and research directions have emerged.
As for the scientific value and potential practical value of the research results, first of all, due to the interdisciplinarity of the proverb, the results of the present research are important and interesting both for Kartvelologists, especially for linguists, and for specialists in related fields; Consequently, the results of such research have a general theoretical significance for typological studies as well. The value of the research results is significantly increased by the fact that the data of non-literary Kartvelian languages in danger are analyzed in the paper; In addition, materials and archival documents obtained during field work are taken into account.
The results of the theoretical and practical values presented in the thesis are noteworthy in terms of the avenues for future research; In particular, in the future, the issues of interpretation of proverbs, their qualification-classification in terms of concepts, broad discussion of the functional role of proverbs in literary works and political discourse are urgent; Also, the future vision of the development is evaluated from the perspective of corpus linguistics: the proverbial fund of Kartvelian languages can become a single electronic database of proverbs of Kartvelian languages after proper processing.
All of the above increases the scientific value of the work and the prospect of practical application of research results.
